Class Description:

Plaster casts provide a way of studying great works from the past, as well as serve as great models from which to learn how to render form from life. In this short 4-week class we will take a simple plaster cast from line drawing, to value study, to finished painting. 

Supply List:

  • Canvas boards/Stretched canvas. Recommended: Centurian brand linen canvas panels from Jerry's Artarama are high quality and cheaply priced

    • (1) 8 x 10 or 9 x 12

    • (1) Pack of 5 x 7

  • Palette - please bring in a clean palette, flat, wooden or melamine (melamine is easier to clean)

  • Steel palette knife

  • Odorless mineral spirits (no smelly solvents). Gamsol and Turpenoid Natural are good less toxic solvents

  • Container for your mineral spirits

  • Paper towels or rags

  • Small container of linseed or walnut oil

  • Brushes – Soft hairs, synthetic blends and sables are good

    • Rounds 1, 2, 4, 6, 8

    • (Optional) Filbert 2, 4, 6, 8 Flat 2, 4, 6, 8

  • Oil colors (please use professional grade Winsor and Newton, Gamblin, Michael Harding, ...etc. )

    • Titanium white

    • Ivory Black

    • Burnt Sienna (Winsor and Newton only)

    • (Optional) Raw umber, Burnt Umber, Winsor Orange (Winsor and Newton), Transparent oxide red (sometimes called Transparent Earth Red)
