Class Description:

This course, designed for novice and established artist alike, will provide students with the skills necessary to translate any setup into a fully realized piece of art. Through a series of exercises and studies, we will learn how to observe and break down images and setups into the essential components of shape, value, and color. Beginning with value scales and ending in painting from a live model, these lessons will build on each other to form a full understanding of the components of painting construction. Students will leave with a complete skills toolbox and the confidence to work from life in a variety of settings including independent open model sessions and subsequent classes. 

Supply List:

Arches 9x12 oil paper (or any sturdy paper primed with acrylic gesso)

Palette knife (long diamond shape is best)

Blue shop towels or rags 

Oil colors:

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium yellow 

Ultramarine blue

Burnt umber

White 

Gamsol and a brush cleaner or solvent cup

Linseed oil and oil cup

Held palette or palette paper

Assorted bright and filbert soft bristle (synthetic is fine) brushes.

If you’re feeling fancy, a panel carrier and panels to get your exercises home safe and unsmudged.
