Pedro Cardoso
Figure Drawing In Charcoal

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Charcoal is a very malleable and forgiving medium, which makes it a great tool for the purposes of Figure Drawing. Every mark can be ghosted to become part of the finish, as you explore with lines and tones to build your drawing. Charcoal also allows for a wide range of values and textures, which are essential for us to achieve the illusion of form. In this workshop we will explore different charcoal drawing techniques, like the differences between vine, willow, charcoal pencils and compressed charcoals, or how to achieve various textures using stumps, brushes, paper towels and even our fingers, to manipulate the medium we’re applying to the paper. We will also cover topics like basic anatomical landmarks of the human body, conceptualizing the figure into simplified shapes, making more intentional renderings of form, and manipulating value to achieve three dimensional form. All of these techniques will be demonstrated in class, and student’s will work from the model in two long poses, one pose each day.
Day 1:
Pedro will start off the day with a demo on beginning our drawings with lines and tones, and then students will begin working on the day’s pose.
In the afternoon, Pedro will do another demo on how to develop values, edges and accents, bringing our drawing to a finish. Students will then apply the same techniques to finish their own drawings.
Day 2:
There will be no demo, Pedro will work alongside students and provide one on one feedback as they begin their second drawing.
Pedro will demonstrate compositional ideas, and students will then apply the ideas discussed to their own drawings.
This workshop serves as an expansion on the topics covered in Pedro’s Constructive Figure Drawing Class.
