Still-Life Painting in Oils
Wednesdays 6 - 9 pm (3 hours)
6 classes: $450
Starts April 22, 2026
Instructor:
Kevin Harger
Class Description:
Still life painting provides an opportunity to observe light and how it interacts with a variety of materials in a controlled setting. This is one of the oldest practices in painting, and continues to play an important role in the growth of the realist painter.
In this class, we will begin with value or grisaille studies of our still life setups. This will allow us to focus on shadow shapes and building the underlying value structure that holds a successful representational painting together. We will be training our eyes to see this light and shadow pattern as a series of interlocking, abstract shapes.
From there, we will begin to expand our palette and introduce a variety of materials into our composition, such as glass, metal, flowers, etc. These different elements will present new and exciting challenges for us to learn from as painters.
